Does anyone know the quality of Quality Farm and Fleets tractor paint? Also does their IH red match the Actual IH red pretty well. Thanks in advance. Bill {Antique Acres}

With paint, you really get what you pay for. I understand the CASE/IH 2150 will fade to orange but it only cost $35.00 per gallon. I used PPG Delstar on my Super A and it looks great, but I just painted it in June. The paint was $185.00 for 3 quarts of paint, 1 gallon of reducer, and a can of hardener.

I would go to you Case Ih dealer and get some IH 2150.. Looks great... Some people don't like to paint with it, but I think you just need to be a little more selective with your primer and thinner.. The picture I poseted is of an H painted with 2150..

I used the 2150 on my 45 H when I painted it in the spring of 1991. It is currently chipping off in several places. The longevity is not good. I have had much better luck with the Van Sickle paint. However the red is slighty brighter than the IH Rouge.

That is not necessesarily the paint's fault. A paint's chip resistance is also influenced by the undercoats. There is a lot of science in paint adhesion. Using the right kind of primer and properly preparing for the primer can have a huge effect on how well paint sticks. I had this illustrated to me at Martin Senour paint school.
The instructor had a panel that half of it was properly prepped with the right kind of primer and the other half was not. The whole thing was painted with the highest quality base coat/clear coat paint and was fully cured. He then had us drag the edge of a nickel acrossed it trying to scratch it. The half that wasn't properly prepped,
you could scratch down to the primer, the side that was propely prepped, you could barely mark the surface. I wish I had known this about 4 paint jobs ago.

I am sure that was my problem on that paint job. I did not prime it. Thanks for the tip!

Red,
Did you add any hardener to your 2150? Do you mean chipping like rock chips or flaking/peeling?
I'll be doing a B and M in the future and need all this "good info" for then.

Phil

Phil I did not add any hardener on the 1991 paint job. It just started flaking off the tin work and the deck the last couple of years.

Why not use Imiron and then not worry about the paint fading? Twenty years from now it will still look at if it had just been painted yesterday. In the long run, this is the cheapest way to go.

Has Imron been treated ?
A few years ago I had a local autobody guy paint a coupe of RC Airplanes for me with Imron. I had been told on more than one occasion that a full suit and breathing appratus should be used when painting with Imron, since the stuff was very carceogenic. Any truth to this ?? Or is Imron of today not the same as when it first came out ?

Imron fades too. Any paint will fade and oxidize
if it is exposed to a lot of sunlight. I have 2
tractors and a truck that were painted with imron
about 25 yrs ago and they are faded. They sit outside all of the time. Even cheap synthetic enamel will hold up well if it kept in a dark shed. SUNLIGHT IS THE WORST THING FOR PAINT. My F-12 sits in a dark shed and only comes out for shows and after 8 years it still looks as good as the day I painted it.

Thanks for the tip Don. Didn't know that. Might do that on my next project that Mrs. Red better not find out about. Or Red is a Dead Red.

Some people like it. I think it is not very good at all. My 2 cents worth.....
