H Distributor Installation

I have a problem. We were working with a '42 H when it quit running. We tracked the problem down to the points - The spring steel that opens and closes the points broke. It appeared to us (having little experience with this particular situation) that we had to remove the distributor housing to replace the points. We made an index mark on the distributor housing and the mounting plate so we can reinstall the housing where it was, and we indexed the way the rotor was pointing, but when we pulled the distributor that index got bumped and moved. We know within about 15 degrees of rotation where it should be, but not exactly. If we turn the engine over so the timing mark on the crankshaft pully is on the timing index pointer, and set the rotor to point at the cap's post for #1 cylinder will we have it right? Any hints will be greatly appreciated.

You're close...Make sure you bring #1 cyc. up to TDC on the compression stroke, (Remove the front most spark plug (#1) and stick your finger over the hole to feel air being forced out) then mate the mark on the crank pulley with the pointer on the timing cover. Now install the rotor and see the relative position of the contact end of the rotor to the corresponding post on the dist. cap. that will be #1 then clockwise around the cap the next post would have the wire going to #3 plug, next to #4 and last to #2. You shouldn't have had to remove more than just the cap, rotor, & dust cover on the distributor to change the points unless there has been a serious field modification done to your dist. This should at least allow you to get her started and then you can fine-tune it by rotating the base of the distributor to get it right on the money. Good luck//FB

Bob - That should work since you know you're 'already in the ballpark' as to its original location. Make sure when you turn the motor over you are at TDC on the #1 cylinder of the compression stroke. Its easy to get things 180 degrees reversed (ask me how I know that) so if you try to fire it up and she refuses to start and backfires/etc., you have things reversed. Make sure your point gap is set beforehand. I use an inductive timing light after I get it close and it makes it easy to set timing right on, especially if your light has a built-in engine tach. Good luck.
