I have a 43 H farmall fixed up like new. I have got to the point where I use it alot for light work such as raking hay. I really like using it but here is the problem. After driving it for a couple hours that 4th gear seems pretty slow. Rake hay all day and it doesn't seem like you get much done. It would sure be nice to have a gear in between 4th and 5th. I never have done any transmission work to an H but thought of a wild idea while raking the other day. Take transmission apart and switch up some gears (maybe getting some gears out of I don't know how many thousands of transmissions you could find in variuos salvage yards) and making a faster forth gear and maybe changing some of the other gearing if you wanted to or had to to get the faster forth. Maybe this is a complete shot in the dark but thought I would see if anyone has ever tried anything like this or had any thoughts.

I had the same problem with my 39 h when raking. So here is what I did. I bought a Super H. Not a very cost effective solution, but I have found the 39 works good for cultivating and things like that, but is way to slow for raking. Super H is quite a bit faster in 4th.

Hey Bill, I've got another angle. What size rear tires are you running on your H? Example: if the H has 12.4 or 13.6x38" rears, moving up to 16.9 or 18.4x38" skins and rims will move the H down the windrows quicker! Added bonus is lighter pounds per square inch on the hay field. It's a lot faster to change tires/rims than open up the tractor. It'll work in the field, because it works on the track. We did this years ago on our M and SMTA to bring in the silage wagons quicker.

How about a 4th gear from a super H. The supers were geared a little faster. I don't know if there was anything else different that would prevent using a Super H gear.

As the others said, there was an optional 7 mph 4th gear for the H. You would need two gears to change it over and you would have to take both the main and countershaft out of the transmission to change them. You would need part 62396DA, Fourth and fifth speed sliding gear, 29 and 18 teeth, replacing one with 35 and 18 teeth. And, part 62395D third and fourth speed driving gear, 31 and 41 teeth, replacing one with 31 and 35 teeth. Don't know where you would ever find them though, unless you lucked up and found a salvage dealer that had a tractor so equipped and was parting it out.

Raking hay fast just leaves the best part of the hay laying in the fiel...most hays have small leaves and raking fast beats them off.....

There was an option on the H and I think the M also that increased 4th gear from 5 to 7 mph. Like you, I think it should move a bit quicker in 4th.
