I am trying to figure out what year the Farmall A in my mother's shed is. I found a number on it but I'm not sure it is the serial number. The number is cast and is 8638D. Do you think this is a serial number or was it originally on a plate? Any help is appreciated.

Bill:
The serial number is, of course, your most reliable starting point. I don't usually take issue with gene b, posting here, but the engine block serial number will not likely be an exact match with the chassis serial; usually close, but no cigar.
Then there are the casting dates. All the big pieces,... engine block, clutch housing, transmission case, axle housings, wheels,... will have a casting date: look something that looks like a little plate, maybe 1/2" by 2", with what look like slotted screw heads (altho' the whole thing is integral to the casting). The numbers are for day and month,... the letter is a code for the year, starting with "A" in 1931. So the letter "H" meant 1938, "M" means 1943 and "P" stands for 1946.
It may take some wirebrushing and some degreaser to find these codes.
Good luck.
RedTed/MO.
