I USE THIS TRACTOR TO CUT ABOUT 5 ACRES OF GRASS.
I REPLACE THE COIL ABOUT ONCE A MONTH. I'AM USING THE CORRECT COIL AS SPECIFIED. WHY DOES THIS COIL KEEP GOING BAD?????

Bill...the 184 is 12V negative ground so I assume that is the way you have it hooked up. The alternator on the 184 has a ballast resistor on the back of it...Is that still there?

The negative coil wire should be hooked up to the distributor. If you have just gone through 1 coil, it could have been defective.

Also check your ignition switch to make sure the coil isn't still hot when you think it is off. Don't know whate else to tell you based on the little information here...BB

BAMA BINDER!
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY,
I HAVE GONE THROUGH ABOUT 5 COILS IN 12 MONTHS,
THE NEG. SIDE OF COIL IS HOOKED TO DISTRIBUTOR,
THE RESISTOR IS ON THE ALTERNATOR,AND THERE IS NO POWER TO COIL, WHEN SWITCH IS OFF.
THE PROBLEM OCCURRS AFTER ABOUT 1 TO 2 HOURS OF OPERATION UNDER NORMAL MOWER LOAD AND PRIMARILY ON HOT DAYS. AFTER THE COIL COOLS DOWN, I CAN NORMALLY RE-START ENGINE AND CUT SOME MORE OR AT LEAST LIMP BACK TO THE BARN. OTHER TIMES THE COIL IS TOAST. COULD IT BE THE RESISTOR? ... HOW DO I CHECK IT?

Bill...sorry...I have exhausted my knowledge of coils and potential problems. The symptoms seem to pretty much indicate a heat problem. When the coil gets hot it breaks down.

Out of curiosity, how many amps is your alternator putting out? My thought is your alternator is putting out more amps than required if the regulator has quit working. More amps equals more potential heat in electrical stuff.

I have never seen an alternator putting out too many amps, but I guess it is possible. I am grasping a bit at straws. I assume you are using a 12 V coil and not 6?

Others are much more knowldgeable about these things than me. I have a 184 Loboy but am no electrical engineer. As an FYI, the 184 alternators do cross reference to several other alternators and they are not too expensive ($40 or so) if it happens to be this problem.

THANK'S BAMA & SKYPILOT FOR YOUR REPLIES.

I AM USING A 12v COIL, FOR USE WITH AN EXTERNAL RESISTOR.

I CHANGED THE PLUGS, PLUG WIRES, POINTS, CONDENSER, CAP, ROTOR AND COIL WIRE ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO. THE PROBLEM EXSISTED PRIOR TO THIS AND STILL DOES.

I HAVE TESTED THE ALTERNATOR OUTPUT AND IT IS WITHIN 10% OF RATED OUTPUT.

THE ONLY THING I HAVE NOT DONE IS REPLACE THE (+) WIRE FROM THE SWITCH TO THE COIL AND THE (-) WIRE FROM COIL TO DISTRIBUTOR. I HAVE TESTED THESE WIRES AND THEY BOTH HAVE GOOD CONTINUITY.

CAN YOU GUYS THINK OF ANY THING ELSE? I AM ABOUT TO CONCEDE TO THE FACT THAT MY COILS ARE CONSUMABLES, LIKE GAS AND OIL AND JUST HAVE TO BE REPLENISHED ONCE A MONTH OR SO.

You have checked her out from stem to stern and everything seems to check out. I am stumped. The ONLY other thing I can think of is trying a heavy duty aftermarket coil. Also, I assume you are using solid core plug wires and not noise suppression. I doubt that would affect the coil at all, but you never can tell.

Sounds Like a Bad Condenser
