I am finishing up my 400 and attempting to stop oil leaks. I decided the gasket between the top of the transmission and the gearbox for the belt drive was leaking. I removed the tinwork, steering wheel/ shaft assembly, fuel tank, and managed to get wiring out of the way and pulled the gearbox. I did a very careful job getting a good seal and put everything back together and cleaned everything well so I could make sure the leak was gone. After running the tractor, sure enough a spot of oil was developing but after all that work I found out the problem had been a bad pipe connection for the hydraulic couplers which is located above the belt pulley gearbox. It was a five minute job to fix the leak that took much longer than that to accomplish. At least it wasn't like I made a mistake that cost lots of money to fix. Had a great day working on the tractor anyway!

Congrats Bob, you were successful just a little longer at it. My 300 has a hydraulic leak somewhere ahead of the steering column. It is such a pain to get the wiring & tin work out of the way I have been delaying the repair. I'm not sure whether the leak is a pressure or static one but it doesn't discharge very much fluid - it's just always damp there. Does anyone know of a dye that could be added to fluid so a leak can be traced? Or some other way to more precisely find the source of a slow leak? Thanks Dick

They have dye that is visible under ultraviolet light at auto supply stores but the stuff is very expensive, not to mention the light. If you know any pro mechanics maybe they can fix you up.

Bob, I hate to admit it but over the years I've fixed a few things that weren't broke as well. You can always find solace in the experience you gained!!!..Mike in Exeter Ontario
