Hello,
The tractor purrs like a kitten for about 1 minute on low idle then starts sputtering and I can save it momentarily by giving it full choke and teasing it constantly. The tractor purrs like a kitten for about 20 seconds at full throttle then starts sputtering and I can save it momentarily by teasing with the choke. I have not adjusted any screws on the carb nor have I rebuilt the carb. I am thinking a stuck float? I mean it is definitely a fuel problem right?

What you need to do is unscrew the fuel bowl from the tank and clean out the stem and screen. Then check the line from the bowl to the carb. you most likely have dirt in the line someplace

You need a service manual and a operators manual, well worth the money.....they just make good reading.....With out looking I think there is a screen in carb.at the gas line...

You have a restriction in your fuel line somewhere. Either the screen above the sediment bowl under the tank is clogged, something is in the line between the bowl and the carb, or, as FM said, something floating around in the tank is blocking the outlet.

What happens is, after it sits for a while, enough fuel trickles through to fill the float bowl on the carb, and it will run for a few seconds on that much fuel, but when it sucks the float bowl dry, there's not enough coming from the tank to keep it running.

thanks,
I did not think to look for a restriction TO the carb. Sounds like a winning suggestion.

Yes, I agree it is a fuel problem. Perhaps you have a "floater" in the fuel tank?

thanks,
I will get a flashlight and look into the bottom of the tank.

A fast way to check your fuel flow is to shutoff
the valve at the sediment bowl then disconnect
the line at the carb. Get yourself a coffee can
and get some one to turn the valve back on and
watch to see the flow coming out of the line.
If it keeps the same flow for about 3 or 4
minutes check the screen in the carb. If the
flow from the line slows down check the stem
and screen coming from the gas tank. If both
are clean including the screen in the carb. you
are going to have to look at the float valve
check the condition of the seat and check to make
sure you don't have a hole in your float. Make
sure you have the proper float level set.
