I recently rebuilt the motor in my H. Has less than 10 hours on it. Has blue smoke coming out of exhaust almost constantly unless i put it under load then it goes away. Also i noticed that a small amount of oil is coming out the muffler. The motor has excellent power. I was wondering why it is smoking? Maybe the rings are not yet seated? I am sure I did everything correct but maybe i overlooked something? Is this normal for a rebuilt motor? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks Bob

Did this rebuild include a head job? If not, do so with new valve guides and new valves. Oil may be getting by the valve guides. Did you install new sleeves or use the origional ones? If you used the origional, did you hone them before reinstalling pistons?

i gauruntee you oil is getting through the valve guides. get some automotive-type seals that will slip over the OD of your guides and still be small enough the spring wont pull it off. your H valve stems are .341"- the same as small-block chevrolets.hope this helps-it worked for us.

My H rebuild has not smoked even at initial start up. Are you sure you put the rings in properly? They can be put in upside down by mistake allowing oil to blow by on compression stroke causing oil burning. If it has adequate power and the plugs don't foul, you might as well let it go for now to see what happens.

Bob, This example is a little off subject of Farmall, But... In 1988 we had a 3306 Cat rebuilt
by Cat. This engine was on an irrigation well,..
pumping 1000 gal/min going to a Valley center/pivot, 1/4 mi long sprinkler. Holding 24 psi at the pivot. We got this engine back in time for summer corn
watering . June-July-Aug-Sept this well ran 24/7
that summer except for maybe 8 to 10 days (rain)
this engine ran hard . Would use 5 gal of oil ever 12 hrs all that summer. Cat said the rings would seat, they did NOT seat at all, Cat came and got it in the fall to put in new rings. For thet had put in chrome rings. They replaced them with cast iron rings! when we got it back the new rings seated in 3 days. To watch this engine run before the ring change there was no noticable smoke at all. For your H I say it needs 20 hrs of hard disking
or chiesel plowing. Mowing is not hard enough
to seat rings properly. Good luck John A.

I know I didn't replace my valve guides when I overhauled my H and it smokes pretty good for a minute or two when I first start it.

Did you alternate ring gap ends? If they are all lined up on top of each other you will get constant blue smoke. Each end gap should be 180 degrees from the next one.

I just rebuilt an ATV and have the same
problem. Except it doesnt go away when
under load. I am thinking its
the head gasket since I didnt replace it.
Either that or the valve guides.

I havent read up much on the rings seating bit,
but seems like it shouldnt smoke that much
due to that. Also, I would think under load
you would get more smoke, if the rings were
leakin the oil.

A friend of mine who does a lot of engine work always tells me that it's important to put an engine under load and work it good to break it in after a rebuild. Maybe you are on the right track about seating the rings.
BTW, don't forget to retorque the head after you run it a few hours.

Blue smoke when you start the engine on one of these tractors is always normal, since they do not have valve seals, some oil will go past the valve guides into the cylinder.

Constant blue smoke I think would be okay as long as it isn't really thick, given the hours you have on yours. What you really need to do is work it a little bit pulling something or going up a few hills in a higher gear. I would agree with you that your rings probably aren't seated yet.

I have 36 hours on my H rebuild and it still smokes when the engine is cold. It quits as soon as I work it a little bit. I'm not worried.
