In responce to buying 706D the reason some of the 282D start hard I said this before and say again you( CAN NOT ) check glow plugs unless you take them out of the injector and look at them and test as you look at them. you may get a good reading checking them in the injector that not good enough, seen this to maney times on all D282.

AceS I have to agree with you on the glow plugs you cant be sure till you see them glow red. The local dealer told me the same thing.

I have seen them show good on meter and after taking them out only get hot about half way and not to hot, seen them with end burn off and when you take them out they will spark at you out the end so you got current flow to move gauge put no heat, tractor will start in hot wheather but mis on 1 or 2 cylinders, you can check for ever until you take thwm out and look at them. I have had to drill more than 1 glow plug out did not like it but that is life and with a tractor 40 years old life will not get better.

You are right about the valves, but not about the glow plugs if you donot that them out and see that they get red hot you can not be sure you need all six not 5-1/2 or 5 seen it to maney times good reeding on gauge take plug out and not get hot enough or not at all. been there done that
I know they can come out hard had to drill some after finding out had 1 bad 1 that showed good on the gauge.

I have never saw a glow plug that if it worked that wouldn't get red hot. Its not worth the chance of twisting a glow plug off to pull them out to check them. If the show continuity with a ohm meter they are good.

On the 282 if the valves are in spec for depth in the head. I set the valves as close to the surface of the head as possible (.002-.004 below the surface). I have overhauled several tractors with this engine and they all start good. I can glow pug my 560 and start it at 10 degrees with out shutting off the loaders PTO pump and have started it at 20 below zero with out being plugged in. As for glow plugs either they work or the don't.
