I have a '41 Farmall H and was going down the road a while ago anou d absolutely wouldnt go into fifth gear and stay. Last night i had my tractor out and engaged the belt pulley and ran it full rpm and herd a little nock and didnt think much about it until about five seconds later it realy was knocking hard so i shut off the belt pulley and pulled it into the shed. I am now tearing it down getting ready to split the tractor (this is my third time this year splitting the tractor to look into the trans). If you would have any advice on what would or could be wrong i would appriciate it alot!

Make sure the 2 bearings in the driveshaft that goes thru the front of trans housing are good. There s/b no play in this shaft. Mine were shot. Also check 4th/5th sliding gear for wear. Rails and/or detents could be a problem. Shift lever pivot may be another place to look or the end of shaft could be worn. Let us know what you find. Good Luck. 3 splits in one year on same tractor sounds like a pain in the a**!

Also check the fifth gear pilot bearing.

How are you defineing "splitting the tractor"? Are you taking off the steering column/gas tank/ transmission cover or are you taking the engine/bell housing away from the rear end? Just curious what you are doing when you work on the tranny. Appreciate an answer. Dick

Check the inside surface area where he pilot bearing rides.Sometimes the surface will wear to a point that the pilot bearing doesn't have a even or flat surface to mate with. I do not think there is a fix for this problem other than replacing the part.

I split it by the belt pulley and took off the trans cover. My pilot bearing went out and broke a constant mesh gear(the rollers in the bearing)
What could be going wrong to make the piolot bearing go out so fast?
