I have a 1942 Farmall H that I recently restored. The tractor never had an electric start system on it. Recently I have been thinking about converting to electric start and was wondering will I be able use my magneto or do I have to convert to dist.? Also what other components will I need? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks Bob

you didnt say if you wanted to keep original you can get the amp box from a junk yard and dont have to have lites as that was an option when new you also can get a wiring harness and original gen and cutout and battery box the mag has nothing to do with electric start

You can put a 12 volt generator on the H and use the orginal brackets and not cut the hood. The generator will put out around 30 amps more than enough to keep the batery up.

One more thing that hasn't been menchioned is a charging system and a battery. If you do not have a generator or battery both will have to be added, also a cut out or voltage regulator.

Then of course you will need to make up your mind if you want to go 6 volt or 12 volt. 12 Volt would eliminate the generator and voltage regulator for an alternator. Now comes the question, do you have an additional belt pully on your fan pully to operate either one?

Nothing is ever as simple as it seems.

GOOD LUCK

You can take your Delco generator to an alternator shop and have it converted to 12 volts. They simply change out the field assembly. 12 volt regulators are still available. I have done this several times. Cost runs around $125 for the generator conversion along with a new 12 volt regulator.

Thanks for the info! My tractor does have the place for the starter and the ring gear looks like brand new, also my fan has the extra pulley on it. I thought about 12 volt but all the alternators I've seen on H's you have to cut the hood to get them to fit. Does anyone know a place where I can get a alternator that will fit under the hood? Thanks Bob

Bob,

I'm overhauling the electrical system on my H now (previous owner converted it to 12V but did a poor job and nothing works). I just purchased a "new", rebuilt Nippon Denso alternator on e-bay for $40. I haven't received it yet but it is smaller than the 5-6 inch standard housing diameter of most alternators. I understand they will fit under the hood without any problem, and better yet, they fit on the existing mounting bracket without modification. I will need to fabricate the tightening bracket attached to the thermostat housing. When I get the alternator I'm going to take it to the auto parts store and find out what model and year car it fits. I can give you more information then, e-mail me if you want the specifics.

My H has a magneto and runs great. I converted from 6 to 12 volts a few years ago and I didn't cut my hood, but I do leave the right front latch undone. I use an idler pulley to keep belt tension.
Last month, I saw a grader with an H engine that had an alternator mounted on the other side of the engine with a bracket fabricated to bolt to the goveroner cover. When the spirit moves me to do something different with mine, that's what

Oh yeah I forgot. One more question. Do I have to get an amp gauge and the box it goes in? I don't plan on putting lights on just electric start. Thanks Bob

yes you can convert to electric start with an alternator that will not mess up the hood. get a very small one from the parts store made for some of these small cars and make the bracket so it work with and offset so you do not have to cut the hood. Now a guage is not required but an on and off switch is ... got to have some way to cut the current from the alternator off and not drain batter but you can stay with the mag you have on it too so hey.. a lot of things work. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KEEP IT ORGINAL .

Your magneto will work just fine with electric start and in addition to the bell housing Jonathan mentioned, check to see if your flywheel has a ring gear for the starter. I don't remember if all H's had that ring gear or not.

well first does your (h) have a hole in the tourque tube to install a starter? as far as your magneto, if you can convert over to electric start you can still use your magneto.as long as your tourque tube or bell housing will accomidate a starter you shouldent have to much trouble.
good luck Jonathn mirgon

My Grandfather had a H with a magneto, and it
had electic starter and lights it was a six
volt system. It was a early model 1940's H
he ordered brand new. It came with a battery,
generator, and lights, and ammeter gauge with
your headlight switch you had a low charge
setting and a high setting. If you was going
around on short trips kept on high, but if you
was working in the field all day you kept on low
as not to boil the acid out of the battery. You
could run the tractor without a battery but you
had to tape the leads as so not to short them.
You could hand crank if you wanted. He had a
Super M, M, H, Super C, Those tractors worked
very well with little upkeep. You could change
implements from the Super M,M, H, easy.
