I just inherited a 1946 Farmall-A. The tractor is pretty much restored.

One thing I noticed, there appears to be a notable amount of tranny noise when operating.
It is a whining type noise. Most notable when you are driving up and down small inclines, or road gear. Is this normal? Is there something I can do, or are they just like that?
Many thanks in advance
Bill

Noise is common in the A transmissions. Nearly all have some noise, especially in 4th gear. The oil level plug for the transmission is on the left front of the transmission behind the brake actuator rod for that side. Likely you'll have to take the pin out of the yoke on the actuator rod to get to the level plug to remove it so you can check the level. Level should be up to the plug, no higher. My A service manual says the transmission holds 5 quarts. If you have a PTO, then add a pint to that. Also, don't forget the final drive. Fill and level plug is on the inside of each final drive just above where the metal pan is bolted to the bottom of the final drive. The oil should be up to the bottom of the fill hole. There is no drain on these you have to remove the pan to drain them. If you are changing the oil in the final drives, get new gaskets before you take the pans off.

Since I have not heard your tractor cannot say if it is unusally noisy or not. All of them are noisy though. I bought my A almost 40 years ago brought it home and installed new belly mower. First time I used mower was sick of whole deal the PTO whined so loud I knew it could not last long. To get to my point the tractor wore the belly mower down to a useless piece of junk and the whine was no worse than on day one.

IF IT IS AN EARLY (A) IT MAY NOT HAVE AN OIL SLINGER GEAR IN THE TRANS, I THINK THEY REALIZED THAT THEY WERE NOISEY AND THEN ADDED THE GEAR IN LATER PRODUCTION MODELS. YOU CAN ORDER THE GEAR IF YOURS IS NOT EQUIPPED AND ADD IT ON.

GOOD LUCK,

I have an "A" , the noise bothered me too. the guys around here say that the noise is ok as long as the gear oil is at the proper level. There is a inspection plug in the trany housing under the seat just behind the serial number placard. this plug however is often twisted off. if this is the case, use a flash light to look down the fill plug hole , oil should be visible just below the shifter rails. wile your at it check the final drive case both sides, this plug is located on the inside next to the draw bar attachment bolts, remove plug ,I use a 1/2 inch drive( no socket) oil should be level with the hole. good luck !

Due to the straight cut gears in the tranny you normally get a whining sound. This would be most noticeable under load or at high speed. SAm in NS

At one point in their production,IH went from machined gears to cast gears as a cost saving measure. As far as I know, these were only used in the Super A's. The cast gears are very noisy, especially in revearse.
