I have to agree with CNKS I tore down a late 80s Chevrolet engine some time back and it had crud in it you wouldn't believe. Am sure it had never seen non detergent oil.

On the trans, I suggest the 85-140W for it's thickness. The A trans, even in good shape, is somewhat noisey. Thicker is quieter. The HyTran is way too thin. After pushing in the clutch you must wait awhile before shifting.

The engine depends on what was in it. If it had non-detergent oil in it, then you need to run a non-detergent 30 weight oil in it. The reason why if it was non-detergent you would have to stay that way is because there would be sludge in the engine and a detergent oil will break the sludge loose and cause problems. If a regular oil was run in it, use 30 weight or 15W-40. If you are totally in doubt, pull the oil pan or valve cover, if there is thick goo then it had non-detergent, if not - go ahead with the good stuff.

In the transmission, belt pulley box, and final drives you can use 90 weight gear lube or 85W-140 gear lube. Hy-Tran will also work, but the seals will be more likely to leak and the gears turn longer when you step the clutch in.

I run all CaseIH and Rotella oils.

What you say is true. However, this question comes up over and over again. We were running detergent oil in our tractors in the 50's. Unless the tractor has not been run for 50+ years, is there any chance of it having non-detergent oil in it? Or, are people buying old tractors and putting non-detergent oil in them, simply because it is still available and they think it is right? You are going to find glop in a tractor running detergent oil if it hasn't been properly maintained, same thing will happen (stuff breaking loose) once it has the oil changed. Hope I don't open a can of worms with this, but that's OK too.

When I rebuilt my A about 5 years ago, The last thing I did before the tear down was to run it with about a quart of Marvel Mystery oil in it for about 20 minutes. When I tore it down, the muck had softened up and you could see where the mystery oil had been eating up the old deposits. It had never seen detergent oil before the tear down and now that everything is clean and fresh, I run nothing but detergent. I wouldn't recommend that you do the Mystery oil thing unless you're going into a tear down like I did.
