Ignition coil follow up Question

I have read with much interest the comments regarding ignition coils. Having read these I have a question regarding 12 volt coils. When using a "generic" 12 volt coil an ignition resistor is used to reduce the voltage to approximately 6 volts at the coil. I understand that Wells makes a coil that does not require a resistor and that NAPA also has one (part numbers unknown}. What makes these coils different than the "generic" that requires the resistor? What happens if a resistor is used with one of the coils that does not require one?

Coils can either be purchased with an internal resistor built in, or without one for use with an external resistor. I am assuming this is what your are refering to. I have never used a resistor on a coil with a built in resistor so I can not answer this question.

If you use a resistor when you don't need one you will reduce the voltage at the primary of the coil. That will reduce the high voltage produced by the coil giving you weak spark. The engine may run, but not as well as it could with a proper spark.
