I just bought an IH 684. Real nice little tractor, runs nice, straight tin, everything works except the brakes. They used hydraulic brakes on the 574,584, 674, 684, etc. The brakes just go to the floor when pressed, looks like some hydraulic fluid is leaking up by the cylinders that compress when the brakes are stepped on. I haven't had a chance to tackle this yet. Anybody know what's involved with fixing this? Thanks for any advice.

The best thing to do is replace the master cylinder in stead of repairing it. But first make sure it is leaking at the cylinder. Bleed the air out of the system by clamping the rubber return line that goes to the transmission cover. Then start the tractor and bleed the bleeder on each side over the rear axle housing. Looks like a grease fitting sticking out of the side. It may take awhile for the fluid to get out or you can push easy on the pedal while holding the opposite pedal down slightly while someone opens and closes the bleeder. Get a clear plastic tube that will fit over the bleeder and take off the cap behind the seat stick the plastic tubes in the hole and bleed that way you won't have to keep opening and closing the bleeder. You can see the air bubbles when they leave. I have one of these tractors and it is a great handling tractor. It gets its brake fluid from the hydraulic system. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, Al. I will try it as you had suggested first.
