I have a Farmall 656D Hydro. Where we live here in VA we mostly have mountains. I love this tractor and use it for all the hay work. So of the feilds are really steep and even though the tractor is as sure footed as a mountain goat, it can only do so much and I have slid off the fields a few times, anyways the tractor has the cast center wheels and I have located another set of cast centers and outer rims. My question is, will this be to much on the rear end of the tractor, and durring my search for the rims and the wheels, a guy told me I needed to be using dual hubs??? Is he right??? I was just gonna put two set of the orignal wheels on the axles. Please help.

Brad: Your idea will work just great. Dish the inner cast wheels in and outer cast wheels dished out. Your duals will be quite close together. You have two mounting rings on each rim and by putting lugs in or out you get 4 positions for each wheel. My memory is a bit rusty but I believe outside wheel is about 3/4 inch over end of axle. I would get rid of all wheel weights and liquid weight. I used this set up on my 560D with flat top fenders from 656.

I did think one time about giving more space between wheels by moving outside wheel out more, so it only was on axle by 2 inches. My plan was to put a spacer between wheels (as a large pipe 16-18 inch diameter) so it caught where wheel weights mount and putting long bolts through wheel weight holes, to give strength. Just a thought, I never did get it done.

On my 656D I had a cab, that is how fenders made it to 560. These tractors are same dimention in wheels and axles. I had snap on duals for 656 as I wanted to be able to remove quickly for some work. I had 656 tires on 72 inch centres for mower conditioner, plow, corn planter and cultivator. Those dual were not used much. I also had axle duals on 1066. No liquid or solid weights on any of these tractors.

Why would you need to take the calcium out?

You don't need to I just chose to. I will say 560 and 656 are a much lighter chassis than the larger 06, 56, 66 and 86 series tractors. You are adding a lot of tire, may just be to much for that rear end.

My 656D pulled a 5 x 16 semi-mounted plow, 8 inches deep. It pulled mower conditioner, corn planter, sprayer, grain drill. I plowed some hills to. It did it all without liquid or solid weight. Now you convince me why I should have hauled a half to a ton of weight other than for soil compaction.

My 1066 pulled a 20 foot disc 20"blades, 24 foot cultivator, forage harvester with wagons and 12 ton manure spreader all without added weight and same reason as 656. I have taken 1066 with harvester and wagon into a corn field. The season was wet. A 100 hp tractor, 4x4 loaded with weight had pulled out, couldn't harvest. He left ruts as deep as 4x4 could make, and full of water. 1066 with duals made it's first rounds in his ruts, harvested whole field (30 acres) pulled and filled wagons.

If I am going to move something with a tractor it won't be calcium chloride.

One more question. Could you just put each side dished out. Both sides are dished out right now and I wanted to leave the inner ones that way so when I pulled the duals off it would leave the inner ones right.

How long are your axles? These tractors had optional longer axles. Standard axle was aprox. 84 inches from one side of tractor to other. The longer ones were about 100 inches side to side. If you had long axle you could do just about anything you want.

Look at another senario, leave wheels as they are (dished out I presume) Get a piece of axle to put in proposed dual. Use a sleeve to couple axle in dual to tractor axle. For added strength add the cylinder spacer size of wheel at wheel weight bolt holes as I spoke of in previous post. Then put long bolts through wheel weight bolt hole from one wheel to other. I hope this gives a clear picture of my thoughts.

Another item you might look at is discarding the extra cast hubs and converting your proposed dual rims to snap on. I don't know cost on any of this, but wouldn't hurt to check. The snap on duals are very quick to mount and dismount. Sounds to me as though you just want some added stability on those hills, duals will do that.

I know it is good to leave these inside wheels out to give stability when not using duals. I see guys going around here with 100+ hp tractors, factory duals, inside set at 66 inch centres and duals off. They must be a tipsy rig. I know the few times I had duals off my 1066 and inside at 66 inch centres, it scared the H out of me driving around yard. If you have any more questions don't hesitate, I love this stuff. Let me know how you make out.
