Hello all,

I ran across a 756 Diesel in Stephenville, TX. Appears to be in good shape. Dealer says the 6 cyl has 3175 hrs on it. I don't recall the year model, but it has the Torque Amplifier, 3 pt & hyd connections.

He's asking $8000.

If it IS as good as it looks, is this a good deal? Fair Deal? Absolute ripoff?

Thanks...please email me

Keep in mind that the dealer's asking price is probably a lot more than the price he'll take. If you're interested, offer about 20% under his asking price; worst that can happen is he'll beat the pulp out of you...

If someone restored a 756 or any modern Farmall with 3 point hitch to the point where they were brave enough to offer the equivilant of new tractor warrenty, I would pay more than that top book value. Just ask yourself and compare with what is new on the market today, and further the price of the new tractors. That is if I were going to do some serious farming.

I agree with you. Today a new 75-80hp tractor runs around $35,000.00 to $40,000.00 and you can't do much if any more than a 30 year + old tractor wich you can buy from $3,000.00 to $10,000.00. The newest tractor I have is a 1970 856 down to a 1967 706,1966 806,1965 1206, 1964 806 and to me, there just as good as a new tractor is today!

Would take some money to replace that line up Larry. I am not sure money could do it. With a good maintenance program you will not have anymore down time than the new ones.

Let me further qualify what I said in earlier post, Your vendor said new engine had 3175 hours on it, and it appeared to be in good shape. Do you know the total hours on tractor? As I said earlier 56 series tractors now 30+ years. You have to start thinking about items like front end wear including power steering, transmission, hydraulics, clutch and TA, rear axle housings, wiring, pto, 3 point hitch, linkages and controlls, etc. If your vendor could assure those items are all excellent then tractor is probably worth $8,000. Ask him for a price with a guarentee on all those items plus engine. Just ask and get his reaction.

The reason behind my thoughts being, that I started in early 1990's to restore my Farmalls SA and 130 I have the mechanical end just about complete. As you can see I don't put a whole lot of time into this. I have not needed to touch either engine. I have spent close to $5,000. on parts probably half of that went to each tractor. These parts were all mechanical not grills, hoods, etc. So you see what can go into a small tractor, will give you some idea what you could spend on that 756. SA will be peanuts at parts counter along side 756. Today I know my tractors are in excellent condition, and further I know I could put them in field along side any comparable tractor and they would be just as reliable as new ones. If I considered they were each worth $1,500. to begin with and considered my time, I couldn't sell them for 40% of what I have invested.

Just two years ago was working 130 along side a 3-4 year old FordNH. Both tractors quit, I went and bought a new distributor drive and repaired in field. The other guy not having any way to diagnose, had tractor towed off to dealer. It came home with a $4,000. invoice.

If you are absolutely sure those items I previously mentioned have been refurbished a used tractor is worth a lot of money. If you are planning to work 756 and could be guarenteed on those items it is probably worth more than $8,000.

Sounds high to me . You might be better off at a farm sale or an individual sale . Dealers seem to be on the high side too often. I know of a 766 gas that a dealer is asking $8500 for, I've found another 766 diesel in same cond. for $6500. Hope this helps

For a 756, I think 5,500 would be for a darn fine tractor, and 6 is as high as I would go for one in immaculate condition. If there isn't a single thing repaired on it nor needs repair, I would pay 6. Brand new paint, 6 and a half. Good luck.

Seems quite high to me. 56 series tractors are now 30+ years old. Unless it is an exceptional tractor, not needing other repairs, it is too high.
