My 51 SC needs an oil change. Can someone point me in the right direction on what grade oil to use for the engine? And can anyone tell me the type of gearoil needed for the touch control gear box? It's low and starting to whine when I use the side arms. Thanks for your help.

Brian, I run 20w50 walmart oil, 1= it is inexpensive and the front seal leaks a lot 2= it keeps the oil pressure up when it gets warmed up here in southeast Oklahoma 3= all oils are the same why pay for a brand name(that ought to start a few arguments) however you should not switch from non-detergent without cleaning the engine out. As for the hydraulic unit, a case dealership oldtimer told me that you cannot get the original touchcontrol fluid any longer, the next closest thing was non-detergent 30 weight motor oil. I drained the unit, cleaned the screen, poured it in and it has worked fine for six years now.

30 wt. detergent if you work it.
10w30 wt. detergent if a show tractor.
Hy-Tran from Case/IH dealer is better oil than what you buy at a hardware store.

How did you check these fluids to determine which is the best. The hardware store I'm talking about is mainley a tractor supply type store and has been selling it for years and used in all types of tractors and hasn't caused any problems.Everyone has an opinion, but I'm no scientist.

The main thing to consider here is whether you had been running non-detergent, if you have, then stick with the non-detergent, unless you pull the pan, and clean out the sludge... I use 15w-40 on all my rigs up here in the Idaho panhandle...as far as Hydraulic fluid... call me a stickler, but I use nothing but IH Hytrans... even if it cost more...

I use 30w oil in my C, 350 AND 400 Farmalls and they work for me but I live in Ky and if I lived up north I'd use 10w-30 oil .I use hydraulic fluid from my local hardware store which is a TRANSMISSOM-HYDRAULIC FLUID and it works fine.I also use this as my gear oil and torque oil.It cost about 20 bucks per 5 gallon or you can go to your I.H. dealer and spend twice that for the same stuff.
