Hey guys...a while back I posted about the IH fire truck I was buying. I got a 1947 KB-7 with fire apparatus instead of the R-190. It is in southern Illinois near Cairo.

I have the option of spending $600-800 getting the truck moved or spending the money to have the truck checked out and put into good operating condition and then picking it up and driving it home.

I like the second option more all the time. If I have to spend the money, why not put it into the truck rather than the pockets of a hauling company.

As far as I know, the only thing it really needs is a brake leak fixed and maybe a new set of tires on the front. But it would be nice to have everything checked out first.

Anyone know of a reputable shop that could tune up the engine, check out the cooling system, brakes, tires, etc to ready the truck for a 400 mile trip? Thanks! BB

check it over and repair what is necessary and enjoy the trip home. Believe me , you just watch all the heads turn from the people that want the second look. Those 6 bangers just ran and ran and ran.

You would probably spend the money to go over it once you got it home so why not spend the hauling money on it and drive it home. You will be money ahead in the long run. GOOD LUCK and try to stay off the siren on the way home.

Does the truck run now? If so, I'd change all all the fluids, tune the engine with points, wires and plugs. Tires might be spendy. But you could get alot of work done for $600. If the trucks in good shape I'd try to drive it. Of course, I'd have a chaser vehicle with tools and supplies. Good luck.

Runs now...might not stop. I think changing fluids, tune up, belts/ hoses would be cheap. A couple of tire on the front since it is a dually I think at least 3 out of 4 should make it in the back. Brakes might be the biggest expense, but even then overhauling the 1 leaky wheel cylinder would be $150 or less. I figure $600 should get it reliable enough to make it, but then what do I know.

Hello, just left a reply for you over on the oldihc site telling you about this one but you are already here. I am thinking that you KB7 being a fire truck has low miles, thus should be in pretty solid condition. I agree that if you have the time that fixing and then driving the truck home is the best use of your money. Two tires and a good tune up should be well under $600, have fun.
