Andy,
I have a Char-Lynn unit on my SMTA: the pump is on the left side of the engine attached to the governor housing, and the reservoir is right above it attached to a cylinder head bolt. It's a can about 5" in diameter and about 3" high.

Took the hood off and found the tank. Do you use motor oil in it? It certainly was low.

Mine had automatic transmission fluid in it when I got it. I use that. I also had a leak in the part that's on the steering column, so I used Bars Leaks transmission leak stopper stuff and it appeared to work; I got this advice from a fellow Farmall restorer.

To fill it, remove the 1/2" nut (or 9/16"), and it will pop up a little because it's spring loaded. Dump in the fluid until it's 1/2" from the top; the reservoir says 1/4" from the top, but the manual says to ignore this.

There are two common types of power steering (both aftermarket) that were put on these. The Char-lynn type has the actuator under the hood and the reservoir/pump typically mounts above the governor on the left side of the engine behind the fan. The Behlen type typically has the actuator hanging out in the open above the gas tank, and a reservoir in front of the gas tank on the right side. It may be fed from the live hydraulic pump that came on the tractor, or on tractors with no live hydraulics, there was a samll pump mounted ahead of the distributor to run the power steering. If it is run on pressure from your hydraulic system, check the oil level in that reservoir. I've got a Behlen unit on a SM with no live hydraulics, and it "moans" a little in cold weather until things warm up. Mine uses SAE 30 non-detergent oil.
