Hello,

I have a '56 Farmall 350 that seems to run great except when I attempt to opperate the loader. When I begin to raise the bucket it is smooth, but as soon as I get it much above 2 or 3 feet it seems to loose power and jerk itself up bit by bit. If I stay on the lever I can lift it as high as I want, but I'm not sure if it is good for the hydraulic system. I have check the resivour and do know that I have plenty of fluid in it when the loader is in the down position. Also, both of the cylinders that operate the bucket are single acting.

I am wondering what is causeing this problem and how can I fix it.

I had a Farmall 300 new with 33A loader, all cylinders double acting. To operate that loader new we had to add an additional resovoir. 3 gallons is what dealer added. There should be a breather on top of current resovoir, move it to additional resovoir, and plug hole it came out of. Your added resovoir must be mounted above current resovoir, then all you need is a hose from bottom of added resovoir to fill plug of current resovoir. You will find system works smoother and oil stays much cooler with the additional volume. Don't fill additional resovoir right to top, you need about half gallon of air space. Any questions just ask.

Your best long-term solution would be to convert your cylinders to double-acting, if possible. The working capacity of your hydraulic system is probably marginal to insufficient for your current setup. Take a look at the cylinders - they should have a vent at the end that currently doesn't have the hydraulic hose connected. If you can put a hose between there and your control valve, and convert the control valve over to handle double-acting cylinders, you shouldn't have any more problem. Assuming you have the original IH control valve, changing it from single- to double-acting is just a matter of rotating the knob on the valve. LOL.

If you fill the reservoir with the rams extended you will do some serious damage to the system such as blowing seals.
