I had a starter taken off and rebuilt on a 350 diesel and when I put it back on, I had fire going to the starter with the switch off.Should this happen and if it's not suppose to ,what might be the cause?

I don't about that Red Man I am familiar with the 400 that we had and it had a key switch. Wouldn't that be the same as in your car were you only get juice when you turn the key to the on position.I will agree that you are currect with the letter series because all the kill switch does is ground out the points. But doesn't that all change with the number series? We had that same 400 start by its self one night, ran up against the barn sit there and fry ,thank God for the dogs, only lost the wireing harness and a good portion of the paint, (gas was turned off)we got their just as she spit her last ,and put the fire out .All caused by a short in the electrical system.

My 300 has the solenoid mounted on top of the starter. So the one side of the solenoid is 'hot' all the time.

Same for my Farmall 100; I can crank the starter over regardless of how the ignition switch is set.

I can't speak for your tractor, but for my A, the starter has hot connection (in my case, negative, 'cause it is a positive ground system) all of the time. The starter button completes the ground circuit, causing the starter to run.

Yes you should have fire at the starter.
