Is there any way that I can bencj test this thing other than spinning it over with my impact wrench.I can get spark across the safty gap but not to the plugs when its installed.Ive changed the coil with a known good one,Put in three known good condensors, pulled til my arm fell off onthe crank and pulled it around the feild til I ran out of gas in my other tractor and still nothing.I did notice that while we were pulling it,there was some light black smoke coming out of the exaust.I could move the spark advance or the throttle and maybe get a little hint of starting but still nothing.I could also do this,(I know its dangerous but)While pulling I reached up and choked it and I got alot more smoke out of it then closed the choke and nothing.I also shut off the gas and drained the carb.It would do the lite smoke until ,what I assume to be burning out hte rest of the gas in it,the soke would stop all together. We pulled it so miuch that gas was accually coning out of the the exaust pipe, not gushing out,but coming out,so thats is at least telling me Im getting gas.Any and all suggestions are very appreciaited!BC

BC, send me your mailing address. I will send you a CD that I put together a year or so ago that goes through F-4 mag restoration from one end to the other. Lotsa pictures. Just off the top of my head, it sounds like the distributor rotor isn't in time with the magneto rotor.

Could be a rotor jumping fire where it shouldn't

Almost sounds like to much fuel.Could the overflow back to the tank be clogged letting pressure build in the line? The pump should just lift the gas up to let it run into the carb and the excess runs back to the tank. If pressure builds in the line the fuel could unseat the needle and flood the engine.Just trying to come up with ideas since it sounds like the mag has fire. Good luck, Ed

I agree with the other post that if the bench test says you have enough spark to arc the safety gap you are ok with the Mag. However, to answer your question: I found that the best way to test my F4 magneto on my F12 was to run it backward on the workbench to avoid tripping the impulse. I use a cordless drill with a 1/4in wooden dowel in the chuck. The dowel fits into the mag a little loose, but just moving the drill a little to the side binds it up and it works great.

If it junps the safety gap the mag internally is good(if the safety gap is set properly). It still has to get through the brush at top of distributor to the distributor disk and through more brushes to plug wire.(a deep grove in the disk is not good). It should fire a good plug set at .018.
If mag is weak remember the retarded spark start position gives the weakest spark.(E-Gap and all that). Full advance is the only setting that gives max spark. Don't try to hand start with timing advanced but pulling off is ok. If all this is good ck mag timing to engine ect. You do feel compression on all 4 when cranking??

yes,I do have compression on all 4.I thought maybe the timing had jumped, but it hasnt.Just pulled the valve cover to verify.I put the cap from my other 14 on it to make sure that wasnt the problem but still I get no fire at the plugs.I took the cap off of this one,and put on my running 14 and it started right up.
