....I'm thinking about a 1066 that's coming up next week at a consignment auction....the auctioneer's ad says "4900 hrs, sharp!..offered with minimal reserve."...no other info is given and I haven't seen the tractor yet...anybody got an idea of what 1066s are going for these days?....are there any negative characteristics of the 1066 to look out for?...ie were they known for being hard to start or having bad transmissions ect. ect.?....I'd be grateful for any information, first hand experiance you have had with 1066s..... thank you kindly for your help.
Good luck to all!
Bo

Only bad thing I know about a 1066 is that they quit making them. Without the cab, one of my most favorite tractors for looks and performance.

Check to see if it has the coolant filter - the DT400 series engines had a habit of cavitation if the coolant was not properly serviced. The filter took care of it, or else changing the coolant every couple of years.

Transmission and rearend are strong on these. Some people have a problem with the TA. (original TA in our 1086 lasted 7500 hours)

.....thanks Steven, that's a good tip on the coolant filter....

...that's why I'm in the market for one; I like the look, plus I've seen them in action at tractor pulls and those babies really put the power to the ground....now for the real challenge: convincing my wife as to why I "need" another tractor ;-)
Good luck to all,
Bo

The 1066 was by far the best IH ever made except for maybe the M. A good clean one goes from $6500 to $10,500 and when checking one out take close look at the engine oil dipstick for grit and grim and the and the rear end dipstick for metal shavings, and the front end just give the steering wheel a slight turn to see if the wheels react, and shift it out through all gears and shift the TA in and out also and hit the brakes real hard, and check the hitch to see if it reacts and the pto, if all these check out ok then buy and ill guarantee you that you can always get your money back and then some on a 1066.

....I'm having a similar experiance right now with a JD730D....we got it about 6 years ago and have been surprised at the fact that it's actually gone up in value even though I've had to put some money into it...
Good luck to everybody!
