I have to change the cam gear which drives the live power hyd pump because of some chipped teeth. Was that way when I bought the tractor. I know Bob M. has done this a few times. My question is, where should I crank the engine to before I take the front cover off, or does it make a difference? I've never been inside the front end,(or any other internal parts for that matter and would appreciate any advice). Thanks for any help. Hey The Red, How have you been? Great to see the Raceway M posts. I wish I had more to contribute. Thanks again Bart in Sheffield, Vt.

Do you have any books on it, ie IT of Blue ribbon? Bob M has good pictures. I Had to chage the camshaft on my SMTA. Blocked the rear end under the front of the transmission case. The front pedestal has to come off so take the steering shaft loose at the u joint and the bolts on the sides of the frame. You also have to loosten the bolts on the rear of the frame by the back of the engine and the engine bolts to frame slightly. You have to have some way to handle heavy objects a front end loader works well. Oh you also have to drain radiator and loosten top and bottom hoses. Don't forget to remove brace from mid section to top of radiator(can tell you from experience) With a tricycle front end they want to turn over so if you can somehow prevent that it helps. ONce the front pedestal is out of the way you have to take off belts and crankshaft pulley. That takes a 2 1/2 inch socket. After that is just front cover. Change gear and check timing marks on gear and mating gear. When you put it back together don't forget the oil flinger on the crankshaft(again from experience). Not a bad job if you have some posts of something to securely block the back and a loader or overhead hoist to handle the front pedestal.

Hey Bart - It doesn't matter where the crank is when you pull the front cover off. However before you remove the hydraulic pump, distributor, cam gear, etc, I highly recommend you set the crank to #1 TDC firing (NOT exhaust), and not disturb it until all the moving parts have been reinstalled.

Also taking notes, making sketches and taking photos as you take stuff apart is good advice! I use a cheap (1 meg) digital camera and take LOTS of photos as I tear stuff down. Has saved me much time and headache on several occasions the past couple of years.

Good luck!! ...Bob M

I go along with take photos if your not sure of yourself or your memory bank. I did this on a 656 when I had to go into the 3pt lift linkage, comes in handy.

Thanks Bob M. and Dan. I guess go slow and pay strict attention should help a lot here. The timing part is pretty much what I was after.I've got plenty of time to get it done and this big beautifull heated garage. With you guys around, life is good. Thanks again.

It doesn't make a difference where it's at when you take the cover off. But before removing cam turn engine over and find your timing marks. Take pictures, make notes etc. Good Luck, Mike
