Sickle bar mower questions

We have a sickle bar mower that was originally mounted on a Farmall A. Dad thinks that the mower is an IH. It bolts to the drawbar and has a tailwheel like a brush hog; also a spring-loaded slip clutch and a break-away bar. Can anybody give me information such as model number about this mower? Or, where can I find info about it?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill: The first mower with a rear caster wheel was the 12-B built in the 1930s for the F series tractors. In 1940 a new mower with caster wheel called the No. 25-V. It had a flat bar turned up on both ends. The bar was same size as cross bar of drawbar of H or M. Mower was hinged to the turned up ends. To mount on tractor all one had to do was put 2 bolts in that bolted the bar on front of mower to drawbar. By 1950, 193,000 had been built, weighed 650 lbs. and sold for $122. There is nothing in book but I believe there was a later model around 56-57, really not much change from the 25-V, but seems to me there was another number, my dad had one he bought new in 1958.

Hugh,
Thanks for the information. That sounds like the mower; it bolts right to the drawbar and would have been bought by my Granddad in the early to mid 50's. (The A was bought new in August '47, I took possession of it in August of 2002). Dad says that it is easy to hook up; shouldn't take us more than a couple of days.

He's a little cynical.

Bill

Your dad is quite right, as mower will bolt to the A drawbar same as to an H or M. Because of the numerous hole in the mower cross bar and the drawbar mower could be quite easily change from an A 5 feet wide to an H 7 feet wide. the holes would allow you to adjust so heel of cutter just cleared tractor tire. The disheartening part of this project is if you need new ledger plates and a knife bar, give or take a few odds an d ends, you will spend more than the $122. your grand dad paid for the whole mower in 1950s.

My dad and I used to hitch his mower to H, 300 or 130 possibly a different one each day depending on which tractor was free for mowing.

check for casting marks...Somewhere on the casting it'll say IHC or IH.... if it's an IH..

If you post a picture I'm sure someone will identify the mower if it is an IHC. If you can't post a pic try searching the "Implemnet Photos" under Gallery on the left side. There is a ton of data here but sometimes you have to look it up. Good luck to you, Dick
