I removed front cover and checked cam gear. The retaining nut was about ready to fall off. I removed it by hand. Had a about fourteen or fifteen broken teeth on gear. My question is, Will locktite on the nut be enough to hold the gear on? I pulled the radiator off but left the front end and bolster on. Looks like I can change gear this way. That wide front end looks heavy, heavy. Thanks Dick in Vermont.

Dick - Doubt you can get at the timing gear without removing the bolster casting. The crank pulley must be removed before you can take off the timing cover to get at the cam gear, and the pulley hub is too deep to slide it off with the bolster in place.

And as you suspect, that bolster is HEAVY! You'll need some sort of overhead lift (I used a bucket loader) to safely remove/reinstall the bolster. However when you are all finished you will be delighted with how smooth and quiet the motor runs - well worth the effort!!

Good luck! ...Bob M

Go to your local caterpillar dealership and buy a bottle of green locktite along with some primer. It will solve your problem but i would also use the retainer along with it.The primer is basically just a cleaner but keep in mind locktie is worthless on oil soaked threads.

On my SMTA the cam gear came loose and ended up chipping the camshaft out at the keyway. Cam gear was actually ok. That is what happens when the old girls doe a lot of hydraulic work.

Bart - I wouldn't trust just Loctite to hold that nut! There should be a stamped steel "keeper" washer under the cam nut with a tab that sticks into the keyway on the cam gear. After you get the cam gear nut torqued down you bend a corner of the washer up against one of the nut flats to keep it from loosening.

HOWEVER it's been my experience (once a couple years ago with my SM, and twice recently with a buddy's 400) that the nut can work loose even with the keeper in place. My friend with the 400 has gone so far as to put tack weld between the nut and exposed camshaft threads to be certain it won't come loose again. (The most recent failure destroyed both the cam gear and the shaft - lotsa $$$ to replace!!)

Thanks for the help. I have a small Lincoln welder that should do the trick.I'll let you know when I get this beast running. I bet it will sound different in the front end. Thanks again.
