A good friend has a 666 that he uses almost everyday in his cattle feeding operation and the TA is just about to go out (been well used). Because of the demands on his time he needs to hire someone to replace it for him reather than do it himself.

The local CIH dealer gave him an estimate of $3000. Because the value of the tractor in good working order is only about $3000 he is reluctant to spend this amount to fix the tractor.

Here are the questions:

Is this a fair estimate of what the cost would be????

Could he expect a nondealer (independant) shop to be cheaper????

What should the cost of the parts be???? What would the labor run???? How many hours labor would be involved????

He would appreciate your input on this!!!!

THANKYOU

I think 3000 dollors is a little steep even with the labor. When I replace my TA I went with the HD sprague unit, new HD main and TA clutch discs new throw out bearings, new HD pressure plates and turned both fly wheels for 1000 dollors doing all the labor my self. So $2000 for labor sounds high. I'd sure like to do the job for 2000 dollors plus parts.

Dealers have to predict the worst case scenario, or should. Are they estimating a main clutch and Pressure plate, pilot and release bearings, refacing the flywheel, new rear main engine seal, new IPTO shaft, refacing the TA flywheel? What type of replacemant TA is priced out? Without knowing what work was estimated, it's impossible to say whether it is a decent value. Dealerships will usually have the highest rates, but are usually better equipped, and should be more timely and stand by their work better to be competitive with their local market. And yes, I work at one.

I would think $3000 would be high don't know cost of parts, 16 - 18 hours should do the job if one has the right equipment that would be a clean tractor at $50 an hour that is 800 - 900 labor.
