Errection is completed on my new shop. Still have to put on the down spouts and get the overhead doors installed. Dug the trench for the power today. Concrete guys coming Monday to form and pour the pads in front of the doors. This will be my first real shop, not one recycled from a building orginally used for another purpose. Up until now my shop is one built from 2 recycled wooden box cars.

Never could afford a shop like this when I was a young man and really needed it. Now that I am retired here I am building this shop just to pursue my RED HOBBY in. Insulated and heated so I can stay out of the wife's way in the house during the winter. Last winter was our first one together in retirement. Wasn't looking forward to a rerun of that experience. She's a great partner but we each need our space.

Looks like I will have it done by Thanksgiving. It is sure something that I am thankful for. HOPE THAT EVERYBODY HAS AS NICE A THANKSGIVING.

Congratulations John. I just built one too. Where are the pictures? We want to see what it looks like. I agree with Dick, get everything in that ground before you cement it up. I put in a couple of empty sleeves of 2" and even 1 - 4" PVC on the house side. This way I could add stuff later. You never know, cable, computer cat5, tele, water, heat, air and who knows what in the future. Have fun. RF

Sounds good, I am hoping to build/have built a shop someday. Or maybe buy a place that has a shop on it.

How big is your shop, I have a 22 X 50 garage with a workshop inside, 10 X 24. I still park both of our cars inside the garage and still have room for my H.

Hope you enjoy your new workshop John. Built
mine when 30 years old. 30 by 40 37 Feet tall.
18 inch steel beem with 3 ton trolley to run
39 feet from one end to another. While you are
putting your lines in put telephone and cable
lines so later you have them. Plus I put in
Intercom so my wife answers phone in house she
can beep if it is for me. I built mine in 86
for working on farm equipment in the winter put
200,000 btu Reznor Overhead heater with backup
150,000 Torpedo Heater. Used 10 eight foot
flor. lights. Just this year put 19 inch color
tv on wall to listen to news while I'm working
in there. Not farming anymore so use it to work on diffrent projects. Tell your wife to
stock up on coffee cause your neighbors will be
over to talk and to see what is going on. Lot
of neighbors are retired and come over to BS
about olden days. So good luck and enjoy and
keep us posted.

I'm sure you have your shop all planed to the last detail but... One thing I didn't think about when I was building mine and have wished for several times is a "dead man" or strong point buried under the concrete floor. In that your concrete guys aren't coming until Monday you still have time to include one. My nickel's worth. Dick Davis

Sounds super to be getting a building for your shop. It's almost as much fun building the shop as working in it when it is finished. Enjoy!

Sounds like a great project John, That retirement item is quite real, in my case she had about eight years of empty nest with that house all to herself, all day. Her bit of space is as much cherished as yours will be. A long and happy retirement to both of you, and some good wrenching to you.

C'mon now Big John, this is a family board, lets keep it clean. Whatever you do in your shop is your own business.

Don't kid yourself Just. If the best thing you can think of to turn yourself on is to go into your shop and "get it up" than I won't embarrass you any further by advising you how to do it in proper style. Have lots of fun with those posters! : D ROFL

Looks like we have a rocket scientist here in talking about going out to the shop for activities other than shop work. Funny how some will ruin a otherwise great conversation with statements like this. Probably the only place they can see that type of enjoyment, by themselves!
