Starter keeps binding on ring gear, why?

Hello,
My farmall M runs great, the starter turns over like mad and the startup process sounds great, but sometimes when I start it up, the starter is bound against the ring gear and does not spin. I think it is shooting past the ring gear and no returning? Or is it not aligning up with the ring gear teeth and hitting it head on instead of meshing with the teeth? If a fella were to grease up the ring gear really good, would that solve the problem?
-thanks, aaron

Typically the Bendix is all that needs to be replaced. Replace it first.

Although the engine may always stop at the same two places, one of those is what you see when you take the starter off. And if there is ring gear damage you will see that spot when you remove the starter.

I've run several M's for lot's of years and had several bad starter drives (Bendix) but never a bad ring gear. I have ring gears which are very worn but still work just fine with a good starter drive.

If you should want to replace your ring gear, they are reversible. If it has been used hard for 40 years, reversing it will last 40 or more unless it has broken or bent teeth.

I have seen others throw away perfectly good ring gears because the teeth were well worn. The advice to replace the starter drive when you replace the ring gear prevents you from knowing the problem was only the starter drive to begin with.

more than likely your ring gear is shot. the bevel is worn off of the teeth and the bendix gear locks up on the edge of the now flat and worn teeth. you should always install a new starter drive when you replace the ring gear.

First off, what does the starter gear look like? And what does the ring gear look like? If either one has major flaws, that could cause the problem.

the starter gear looks to be pretty worn and beaten, the ring gear looks just fine.

The ring gear my look good where you looking at it but they only where in two places. A 4 cylinder stops in two places, so that is where the ring gear goes bad.

If the starter gear is chewed up, it needs to be replaced before you trash the ring gear.
