I am going to buy a farmall 400 and we live on a farm and have no way of hauling it. I measured my H by the axels because you could slide the tires in. and it would be able to fit in the our box truck and the sides are seven foot four inches. My H is about six and a half. Could anyone measure a Farmall 400 from axel to axle in inches and post it or send it to my E-mail.

Hugh is 99.4% correct. According to Guy Fay's data book (standard axles) the 400's are 84 1/2, H is 75 1/2. Your truck is 88 inches -- as Hugh says make sure it has the standard axles.

I will concede and go with your correction. I knew 84" was close as I ran several of those tractors on 72" and it was always close to 7' outside. Now that you pointed it out I do remember 84.5" written in manuals, etc.

That measurement holds true for the 300, 400, 350, 450, 460, 560, 504, 656, 544, 666 and 686. I am not sure but M, SM and SMTA were the same. What has me curious is H and SH. My dad had one of those H built in 52 that had disc brakes, new type seat, new type wheels front and rear. It had the same axles as 300. Probably 84.5" was always optional on the lighter chassis of H, SH, 300, 350, etc.

I think this is one place that Guy has a misprint. He lists the H and SH as having 75 1/2 inch axles, yet tread width of the H is listed as 44-80, and tread width of the the SH as 48-88. Without actually measuring, my SH axles are longer than my H axles. I'm sure the H spec is right because I ran an H with the wheels set at the max width of 80 inches.

I never had one of these tractors set at maximum. I found that 72" centres gave a tractor the height of a Farmall good stability. I was planting in 36" rows and this meant every tractor could travel those rows. These included H, SM, 300, 560, 504 and 656. All those tractors including the H had axle near to being same width as outside of tires. As I said before my H being a 1952 had some of the upgrades seen on Super H. Those I listed in previous post. I don't know about the engine.

In 1975 I purchased a 1066 and those axles must have been close to 100" With rear wheels set on 84" centres tires were same width as axle.

Just a word of caution, there are different optional axle lengths for those tractors. Shortest axles should be 84".
