I have a 47' Farmall M with a pto problem. I removed the shaft an houseing from the rear end and replaced all of the seals and that end all seems fine. I think the teeth on the gear in the front of the transmission must be almost ground off causeing the pto to jump out of gear all the time. What would be involved with replaceing that gear?

What I did one mine was to take out a few of those metal spacers.Just the end of the shaft was worn enough to slip off the end so taking the spacers out let the shaft ride up on the drive shaft more.Done that about 8 yrs ago and has been working fine since.

WHen you took off your pto,you should have had some real thin almost paper like metal gaskets/spacers between the pto assembly and the tranny case.I had them on one of my Ms and the other had all of them already out.I just assumed that all Ms or Hs had these spacers in it.The ymay not have I dont know, but i know of several tractors we did that on over the yrs with no problems.
