I'm looking at a 656 gasser hydro to replace my 460 as a loader tractor. It's got a 2000 loader and everything appears to work fine on it. How are these hydros with loaders? All that I will be doing is snow removal and light utility work around the farm. Also, how will that hydro hold up moving snow all winter long in Minnesota? thanks for the help! Happy Thanksgiving also!

We have a gas hydro with a loader that we bought at auction a few years ago for about $5000. Was in real nice shape but a few months later the hydro went out. Cost $5000 to repair. It also burnt a valve a little while later. Other than these problems its been a good tractor. The hydro is great for making hay, but it really doesnt have a ton of drawbar pull for being 65HP.They do sucks a lot of gas when you have it loaded hard.

We had a 656 hydro gasser with Farmhand F11 loader for several years. Wish we still had it. That was the BEST loader tractor I've even run. Never had a problem with it until the end it started to burn out valves and the hydro was getting weak. (loader tractors around here are generally abused, or at least used hard) we used it pretty hard and it had 7000 hours on it when it started having problems. I recommend a good one for a loader any day!

Be aware that they LOVE to drink lots of fuel!

Hey Steven, I talked to this guy again and now he says that all 656s have a slight knock/tick to them. He says he's had 5 of them and they've all done it. I've never used a 656 so I'm wondering how much truth is there to this? Also, he says that a couple years back, he had to replace a spring somewhere in the tranny that pushes against the clutch plate or something like that. Well he says it needs it again. He claims he likes to use the clutch alot. Should I be concerned? What is he talking about in reference to this spring and do I really need to worry about it if I don't use the clutch? Thanks for the help

If the hydro is in good condition,it will do just fine.If you have any questions, post them here or get the opinion of a good machanic before you buy. These guys are right. If there is a major problem, they can be mighty expensive to fix.

Loader use is probably the best use for a hydro tractor, especially in a cold climate. Hydro's loose a lot of power on the drawbar, and therefore aren't so good for tillage work.

If you work them real hard in hot weather, the oil gets thinner & they have a tendency to slip unless everything is right up to snuff in the hydro. Another downside to the hydro is that if you have major trouble with the hydro, it will cost you $$$$ to fix the hydro.

I've never owned a 656 or a hydro tractor for that matter, but have been told that hydro's are excellent loader tractors because of the ease with which you can vary the wheel drive ratio and change from forward to reverse. Makes sense to me.
