656 hydro again; do all the 656s have knocking/ticking?

I'm looking at a 656 hydro (still) and I talked to this guy again and now he says that it has a slight knock/tick to it. He says he's had 5 of them and they've all done it. I've never used a 656 so I'm wondering how much truth is there to this? (it sounds too shady!) Also, he says that a couple years back, he had to replace a spring somewhere in the tranny that pushes against the clutch plate or something like that. Well he says it needs it again. He claims he likes to use the clutch alot. Should I be concerned? What is he talking about in reference to this spring and do I really need to worry about it if I don't use the clutch? Sorry about double posting! Thanks for the help

Hydros were pretty good tractors, depending on what you use them for. I have a Hydro 100 that I am very happy with. You should look for a mechanic who has worked on these tractors before and have it checked out.

That sounds real fishy to me!First of all, hydros don't have a clutch. They have a Foot-n-Inch petal that is similar to creeper brakes on some fork lifts and front end loaders.

There is no clutch plate driving the hydro unit either. It has a flex plate similar to the ones used in automotive automatic transmissions to drive the pump portion of the hydro unit.

You need someone who really knows the ins and outs of Hydros to look at this tractor before you buy it.I am no expert on these.I had a manual for one that was given to me.My tractor is gear drive so I gave that manual to a man that really needed it.That is where I got my limited knowledge from.I don't like what I'm hearing on your post.Don't buy that tractor until it is checked out by a mechanic.

I owned a 656 a gear drive for quite a number of years, never heard any ticking noise. I have read your other post on this matter. When I was farming I had 7 tractors, and never once could I bring myself to buy a new hydro. My reason, I did not want to deal with the problems I could for see 10 to 15 years down the road. My friend the hydros are now 30 years old, and you don't need the problem.
