How does a fella knock out the shaft seal and insert the new rubber o ring seal? Also, I accidently pulled on the shaft after I took the housing off and the fool thing came unjoined in the transmission. How do I reinsert the shaft?
thanks

BTDT last August. It was a big pain to line up and get back in. Remove the entire housing assembly and reassemble. I used the 3/8" rods to help guide the unit in. The flared out portion of the end of the shifting tube will have to slide under the differntial gearing and then be raised to hit the splined hole in the back. You will not beable to see what you are doing. Look at pictures 24, 25 and 26.

To put the shaft back in: find a piece of pipe that will just fit over the outer end of the shaft, and about the same length. Use the pipe to hold the shaft level as you put it into the case. the extra length gives you leverage to balance the assembly.

A little trick I did with that seal was I wrapped the splines with electrical tape and then greased liberally. Seal slide down shaft nicely and didn't have to worry about nicks. Putting that pto shaft back in place will be tricky but can be done. I put mine back in with top cover off so I don't know the trick to it. may take a second person to hold a light up in there to see where you're at. Good Luck, Mike

Just take your time and the shaft will find it's way home. You have to aim carefully; you can't hurt anything as long as the gasket isn't damaged.
The PTO shaft has a 1/2" dia. extension on the end of the shaft that slips into a hole in the end of the transmission mainshaft. The seal can be replaced by removing just the end housing of the PTO .
Carefully clean the splines on the outer end of the PTO shaft and file off any sharp edges BEFORE installing the new seal. A little grease helps to slip the seal and housing into place.
Enjoy!!
