I have baught a Farmall 400 last wednesday, but of course am waiting for it to be delivered. We went and looked it over before we bought it and noticed it had a six volt system. It started fine with it being cold out, but was wondering how hard it would be to change to a six volt system? What would i have to change? Many of the things on the tractor have regulators on them, i don't know if that means anything.

Check out Bob M's step by step conversion at this link. I converted my 400 gas tractor and am very happy with it. I asked the discount parts store for an alternator that will fit a 1970 Chevy pickup and it worked great.

Bob,
Thanks for posting Bob M's conversion. I wondered why the SMTA (it has a alternator conversion) that I traded for had a little light under the hood. Is that to indicate if the internal regulator is in the closed position and draining the battery? I put a single pole internal alternator on my son's 300 Farmall do I need to put a warning lamp on that one also?

The light bulb needs to be in the circuit. It makes a difference what kind of light bulb too. I placed the bulb up above the engine and sometimes it comes in handy in the dark. It isn't needed as an indicator but the system needs it for some reason to work. (I learned all of this the hard way!)

Does Bob M. also have a wiring diagram for an M with a magneto, changing to 12 volt?

You say it has a 6 Volt system and you want to change it to a 6 Volt. I'm going to assume you mean change it to a 12 Volt system. Really If you change the Generator to a 12 Volt single wire alternator you can do away with the voltage regulator. The starter will handle the 12 volt system fine. Then all you will have to change will be all the 6 volt lights.

I think you meant to ask about converting your 400 to 12V vs 6Volts (You can't convert to something you already have).

In the left hand column of this page click on articles under Research and Info then scroll down to Maintenance and Mechanical Information. 5th item down is what you should read and re-read. Then decide if you really want to convert to 12V.//FB

The 6 Volt system does a fine job of starting the tractors. The reason people switch to 12 Volts is to power more than just a pair of headlights. That is, hazards, radios, etc...
If you really want to go to 12 volts, you'll need a 10SI alternator with internal regulator.

Donnt forget to put a resister at the coil and you might want to put in a one way diode at your alt.so that the engine will die when you push the ign.switch off
