I bought a Farmall 400 two wednesdays ago and am still waiting for it to be delivered. It has a two point on it wich I wanted but on the front pivot point, under the belly, of the two point is a cylender that moves it up and down. I can't figure out what it would be needed for unless for adjusting a cultivator? I realy don't need it, I will just end up taking it off for the tractor pull next year. Hope i get the tracor soon, it's been too long!

That it so you can set the draft on your plow, you can adjust the draft when plowing so the plow shear and the land side are riding currectly in the furrow. It can also be handy when hooking up quick hitch impliments by your self.

I have that on My 400 too and found that it is one of the handiest things on the tractor. It lets you change the line of draft to the tractor (Which will change your traction and depth) when plowing with a semi-mounted plow like the 412 fast hitch plow that I have. You can raise or lower the line of draft by raising or lowing the front of the hitch. I also find it very handy for hooking up to two-point equipment and tilting equipment when I using them. I have a two-point mower, blade, 4-wheel rake and a 7-foot snow blower. The newer hitch that they put on the 450 and 560 had a cam in the hitch that would raise the back of the hitch whenever the pull was more that the weight of the hitch. Sort of a mechanical draft control. You could change the ratio by a lever on the right side of the tractor.

My 400 has that option on it too. It is for a traction control system but I find it handy when I am using a blade on the tractor. It allows you more flexability in the blade tilt as well as it will allow you to lift or lower the blade further. There is a place that you can put a pin in the hitch so that you can remove the cylinder if not needed.

That cyl. is used as part of the optional Traction Control. Sounds like your 400 has it. The tractor fast hitch can be used without it as mine doesn't have that option. There should also be an adjustment lever with kind of a "D" ring at the top and notches on the downleg bar below and behind your left knee when sitting on the seat.

I'd keep it and get the operating manual to find out how to use it.
