I can't figure how the steering shaft got bent. The top end of the shaft that goes up into the gear box has a bad bend in it. It wasn't easy to get it removed from the bolster. I will go to my favorite tractor salvage yard tomorrow and get a replacement. (I was looking for an excuse to go there anyway) You may be able to see the bend in the picture. Any ideas how that happened?

Bob

This M has some kind of aftermarket brakes on it. I have only worked on the tractor long enough to get it started as I have spent most of my time working on an H. It looks interesting to me and I plan to check it out when I get a chance.

Your brakes are IH, not aftermarket ....My late model 1951 M has disc brakes...this happened during the change over to disc brakes on the super M ..... Don

Bob, I have a twin to your pivot shaft laying in my scrap heap. I know what you mean about it being hard to remove from the upper bolster housing, Had to drive mine out with a sledge hammer and a block of hardwood.
The only thing I could figure out is someone must have run into something with the front tires.
My steering gear was also missing several teeth right in the middle of the gear.

Take a look at your steering wheel pedastal and see if by chance it is bent. I had that same problem when I was tearing down Old Rusty H. The pedastal was bent big time forward towards the gas tank.

The pedastal looks ok as far as I can see. Nothing seems bent or stressed in any way. I suppose someone just hit something hard with the tractor that caused the bend. Glad it wasn't me driving.

I'm sorry, I missed understood what got bent. I was thinking steering shaft between the steering wheel and the bolster. That bolster pivot shaft or the front wheels took a hard hit somewhere along the line.

Seems to me I noticed something strange about the steering pedastal when I took it off. I'll go look now and add another log on the wood stove too!
