I own a farmall "H" with a twelve volt system. It won't start charging most of the time. I have it wired from the alternator, to the voltage guage in the light box and than to the battery. It has worked a few times. Each day when i sart it up, and back it out of the shed and rev it up full throttle a few times, it will finaly make the needle flick clear to the right off the white making. But than after I shut the tracor off, I can restart it in the same day and rev it up full throttle onece and it will turn on. But for the past few days, I cant get it to work and charging the battery litteraly everyday considering how cold it is isn't fun. Is there anything wrong with how it's wired? Does there need to be a ground wire off the alternator? Thanks, any advice!

there are two small wires on the side of the alternator. one goes directly to 12 volt (like the rear terminal of the battery), the other is more of a signal voltage. LIke Bob, i believe getting the correct signal voltage will make the unit charge at a lower RPM. I install a 10 ohm, 10 watt resistor that i buy at Radio Shack for $1. Others use a diode or a light bulb. Same effect. This wire is shut off when the key or toggle switch is turned off, motor not running.

Bryce - I suspect the alternator is not being spun fast enough to get it to begin to charge. Seems the colder it is and the longer it has sat idle, the faster a 10SI alternator has gotta be spun on the first start to get it to "wake up". Suggest visiting your local junkyard, finding the smallest diameter Delco alternator pulley you can and installing it on the tractor alternator.

One other suggestion: If you have the alternator wired with a warning light, swap out the warning lamp bulb for one with a higher current rating. I find a #168 side marker/instrument panel bulb works fine.
