Interested in an opinion. 1962 140 used mostly now to mow pasture with using rotary cutter. Motor has been rebuilt, tractor painted etc. No transmission issues to speak of. However, when I cleaned transmission gearbox out I did notice that some metal shavings were in the bottom. Some shavings I realize is not something unusual to observe from normal wear. Although, there were a few larger pieces. Mostly small however with one piece maybe half inch in length. I cleaned everything out flushed with kerosene and refilled with 85-140w gear oil. Tractor performed fine even before I did this, and hyd Int hydr-transmission fluid in differential, 85-140w is what I had handy and it's thicker so I used. Like I said tractor performs fine, don't hear alot of gear noise etc, Any opinions? These tractors are well made and pretty tough.

It sounds like it might be the oiler gear. I just finished replacing this on my A. When I changed the transmission oil I found what you described, metal shavings and a few large chunks about an inch in size. The oil gear is not used to drive the tactor it only slings oil around in the transmission. The oil gear is made out of light duty gray metal. What are the larger pieces made of?

I have had 3- SAs, 2- 130s and now a 140. One of th SA did have a noise and final drive did give problems. I wouldn't worry about the pieces you found. They are indeed a durable little tractor. From what you say, there is nothing to worry about.
