I got a Farmall 400 and I noticed that the battery terminals were on wrong(6 volt). The positive terminal is connected to the tractor frame, and the negative was hooked to everything else. Is this possible? If so, is it hard to change back to normal? Also, the clutch in the torque went out three days after i bought it (I am realy pissed!) and am wondering where to split the tractor to get to just the clutch bearing. We would like to split by the engine to check the main clutch.

To change the TA clutch you split the engine from the bellhousing. I know this because I did it on our SMTA. Get yourself a shop manual, it will really help out and answer a lot of your questions.

The actual torque amplifier planetary gearset can only be changed by splitting twice (engine from bellhousing then bellhousing from transmission).

Nothing wrong with 6 volt positive ground. I have a few tractors and a pickup from 40's and 50's and they all start fine on 6v positive ground.

Almost everything that had a six volt system used a positive ground. Leave it alone, changing it may mess up your charging system, ammeter, etc. Wait til you get into an English car that has 12Volt Postive ground! And try to hook up 12volt negative ground accessories, it causes considerable head scratching. John in Nebr.

Leave it Pos. grd. if original is important. The reason, I've read, is because positive ground six volt systems have less potential for corrosion than negative ground. It makes sense.

Your cables are not wrong. They were pos gnd and the reg must be pos gnd also so dont change it. Lors of old 6v tractors were pos gnd. Like the other posts say need good 1ga cables. These started and worked in their day and will still go today unless you dont care about keeping it original.

I don't know what the reason that IH had the positive ground but I changed all mine to neg ground just to be consistant with everything else here on the ranch with a battery. As for the splitting your 400 its pretty straight forward. To get at the main clutch you split right behind the engine block. If your going replace your TA and TA overrun clutches then you will also have to split the next section between the engine block and the transmission housing.

If you want to get everything back to normal, leave it alone. It is a positive-ground tractor and came that way from the factory. Welcome to Farmalls!

Leave the battery cables where they are !!!! Early 6v tractors were (+) positive ground....the bigest mistake ouners make is they, replace wires and cables with 12v ones ,they don't know that 6v requires much larger cables and wire than 12v.....the best money you can spend right now is for a SERVICE and a OPERATORS manuals.....I think the best ones are IHC....you can get them at -- BINDER BOOKS Phone 503-684-2024 or www.farmallbooks.com --- expect to pay about $68 for the two....they make good reading...I read mine through just like reading a story book....I learned a lot.....

Isn't that the truth? My 'H' has always started either like it was out of time or the battery was low. Hit the starter button two or three times before you could actually get the motor to roll over good. I replaced the battery cables with 1 guage cables but had the same result. The other day I was walking by the tractor when it struck me. Check the starter cable itself. Needless to say, that too has a 1 guage cable on it now and the engine rolls over like it's supposed to.
