I have a '55 Farmall 400 with power steering. It won't turn the wheels when sitting still. It seems like id doesn't even have power steering. but when i move one of the hyd. levers i can turn it freely like it's not even connected to anything. I can't think of the name of the unit (what its made by) but its a pretty common name.

In between the two valve bodies under the dash is a metal plug that has a flange with an oring. If the flange is broken the steering will not work without pulling a hydraulic lever and holding pressure on system.

I had the same problem with a 450. It probably the flow divider valve that is bad. I tried erplacing it with a used one but it had the same effect. If you have tried to buy one they can't be found. I ended up plumping a regular flow divider into the system. Now, everthing works.

Martin or other, where is the flow control valve or divider? We have a W450 that acts like no power steering and would like to fix it. Thanks, Ron

If you have the factory Behlen steering try pulling one of the hydraulic levers and the try steering the tractor. The tractor could steer better. This is quick test to tell if the pump is getting weak or the flow control in the relief valve is getting worn

The flow control valve wears on the end and the oil bypasses and the oil don't go into the steering circuit. The only way I know to fix them is to find a valve that isn't worn or put a flow divider in pressure line from the pump to the valves

I had a problem with my power steering on my 400 and I changed the hydraulic fluid and cleaned the hydraulic filter and the steering works a lot better now.Does this happen all the time or when you first start it up.Cold hydraulic won't let things work right until it warms up.If this doesn't help it could be your pump.

You probably have a Behlen unit. If your hydraulic pump isn't up to par the power steering won't work right. Do your hydraulics work ok?
