I have a '55 farmall 400 with a positive six volt system. We have to fix the bearing on the clutch in the torque and was sooner or later going to change to twelve volt and decided to do it now. What is the least amount of things to change to go to twelve?

You'll need a 12V battery, 12V coil or ballast resistor, 12V generator or alternator and all the light bulbs must be changed to 12V. Depending on which configuration & alternator you use, you will need an indicator (load) light or a diode. Starter motor should be OK unless you crank for a long time. There are some excellent diagrams and instructions in the technical articles on this site. Look for articles on 12V conversion by Bob M.

This above reply pretty much hits it on the head. Be aware that you need to change from a positive ground to a negative ground if you install an alternator. It is also a good idea to change the ammeter over to a voltmeter. If you keep the ammeter and change from positive ground to negative ground, you should reverse all the connections at the ammeter. While not really necessary, the ammeter will read backwards if you don't make this change.

Actually, the original generator will work just fine (just like the starter, it was over-designed to the point where it will work in a 12 volt system). You will need a 12 volt voltage regulator, however.

if you keep the sme generator, doesnt the system have to stay positive ground? i agree it would probalby put out 12 volts, but you cant change the polarity of the generator, unless you are working inside??
