Are the guages supposed to fit up against the holes in the hood. I mean against the edges of the metal. Are Farmall hoods known for nt fitting so well? Thanks, Brad

Brad, Bill below has given you a very complete description of the hood fitting and placement. The gauges are inset away from the holes in the hood to mimimize the vibration and consequent wear on the underside of the hood. There should also be a stub bolt sticking up from the gauge bracket that goes through the hood. There was a rubber washer then a formed (To the contour of the hood) metal washer and a wing nut that held the top of the hood in place. The M's had this bolt, the H's didn't.//FB

I can't say that I can recall ever seeing the guages fit flesh with hood hole's. I believe they should be just inside hood holes with a little clearance around the outside of guage. Also, there should be small gap (not big gap) in between bottom front edge of hood and grill. There was insulator spacers under gas tank and radiator. Removal of some or all of these will mess up your hood placement. There should also be a strip of webbing in between hood and gas tank and hood and grill. The only adjustment so to speak of is someplace under the hood there should be a rod that can adjust the distance in between gas tank and radiator.

What is that webbing? Does an "H" have that too?

Not real sure what kind of material was used originally, but an H did have it also. It was in there to reduce or eliminate wear and vibration in between the metal surfaces.

It's kind of like thick canvas and it comes in strips. Tent or awning places ought to have it, and bigger hardware stores.
