I bought a 1976 IH 1066 about two years ago and it has suffered from low power since i've bought it. I've also got a 966 that will outpull my 1066 every day of the week and I know that the 1066 should have more power than the 966. I've changed the air and fuel filters often and I've checked all the throttle linkage to ensure that it is getting full throttle and it is. I have pulled the cover off of the American Bosch injector pump and looked inside to make sure everything is moving right and everything looks good clean and free moving. How can I set this up to run better. No smoke of any kind comes out of the stack like my 966 that leave a nice trail of black.

Something else that will really rob power from a diesel is dirty or worn out injectors. Having them rebuilt is expensive ($70 apiece on a 3 cyl. Ford I had done last year) but it can make a huge difference.

One thing to check is the rubber hose from the charge pump back to the fuel filter if it has been replaced and not with OEM hose you will lose power bad. I don't know what is different about the hose but needs tobe OEM hose.

Are you sure you're not talking about the hose from the final filter to the injector pump this has to be replaced with a OEM hose if you use a universal hose with the crimped ends the fittings have a hole about the size of a matchstick and simply don't let enough fuel through found out the hard way on a 966

Have you checked the turbo? Pump may need a professional inspection. I had a 10 when new, back then most of the 10s were cranking 150 hp+. For want of a better word 9s seemed then to be the lame duck, not so much that they didn't measure to ratings. It was more a case of 10 exceeding its ratings. I am talking of tractors as they came from factory, untampered with.

Had problems once with a Cat 3306, after much searching it turned out to be an air leak on pump. After $1,500 had been spent, a 65 cent gasget around inspection cover for timing. Look for the simple things first my advice.

I've checked the turbo and everything appears fine. I'm not sure how to determine if there is an air leak in the injector pump. I have never given the pump any attention before, but I see there is some paint overspray on the id plate on the pump, perhaps the pump has been off before I bought it, I can't tell since it was repainted before I owned it. I've inspected and gone over everything. My gut feeling is that the pump is set way too low, I guess I will have to take it off and have it checked. I don't want to adjust it myself because I don't have the equipment to do it and I'm afraid of melting a piston down. Something is definately wrong if the 10's were supposed to run much better than the 9's because I'd say my 10 has about 85% of the power that the 9 has.

Brandon, make sure your fuel tank isn't stopped up,I bought a 966 awhile back and had the same symetoms your 10 has.Tried to drain tank and fuel wouldn't come out of the line, took off the pitcock(shutoff valve)and it was full of dirt, pump was starving for fuel, cleaned pitcock and now tractor has all kinds of power. Hope this helps.ugly

There is one of the simple things, got a few kernals of corn in fuel tank of combine, they must have been right size to plug intake. They would stop combine dead in tracks. had to take fuel line off every time and blow back on it. When season was over took tank off and steamed only got dozen or so kernals.
