Just brought home my 1948 cub. It seems to be in good mechanical condition except the transmision is noisy. I added a quart of Hy-Tran to it but I did not help. The next morning when I went out to the shop, the oil that I had added was all on the floor. It had run out thru the right axle housing. Does this sound like the transmission seal is bad?

Bradford,

Drain all the oil out and also the water that is in there with it. Re-fill it to the check plug that is very low on the left side. It should take less than 2 quarts total.

On the left side as you sit on the tractor, you will see a small square head plug on the side of the transmission. Pull this out and let it drain until it stops. You have too much fluid inthe transmission. The noise you hear is normal. Hy-tran in the gear box is fine. 90 wt. is ok too and will quiet down the rear some. The leak on the final drive is due to a bad seal in the side of the transmission. Not a bad job to replace. Use a sling to reinstall the final drive so you don't distort the new seal. Place the new seal so that it rides on an unworn portion of the axle shaft. Make sure you block the front of the tractor so it won't roll when you jack the back end of the tractor and take off the final drive.

Probably the seal, but did you check to make sure there isn't too much oil in it? Im not familiar with cubs, but I know alot of tractors will leak alot if you have too much oil in it. Just a thought.
