I have a farmall 400 with a six volt system. I am going to change to twelve. I understand that you change the lights, alternator and coil. For the coil, Do you just get a new coil or do you HAVE to get a resister?

I agree with Ace, don't be surprised if it doesn't start any better. I have changed two tractors to alternator charging. One is 6 volt the other is 12 volt. It has been 10 years since the change and to date the 6 volt system has been no trouble, even the ten year old battery is still performing. I had it going New Years day at -10C. With the 6 volt system you need only buy the alternator with built in 6 voly regulator. My supplier charged me same price as 12 volt, on a new alternator.

My 12 volt change over required new lights, coil, ballast resistor and the alternator. It is now on its 3rd battery, 2nd alternator and a host of other problems.

Many people like yourself say I am going to fix this tractor and its starting problems. They spend a lot of money changing to 12 volt when really all they needed was a better charging system. Also check your cables, over years many of these 6 volt tractors have been changed to wires that are away too light for job. On my conversions I use a push button, starter type button on dash for exciting the alternator. With the push button you don't forget and leave it on.

On the M I have, it was changed to a 12 volt system and above the coil, there is a little box about 3-3 1/2 inches long and I do belive it is the resister.

Don,t be suprised if ti does not start any better with 12V than it did with the 6V. Been there done that.

I have converted 2 different tractors and put new 12 volt coil with resister on one and used a chrysler type resister on the other. Both worked equally well. I used an alternator on both, bought used from a wrecking yard. Have never regretted changing over though some of the guys say stay with 6 volts and tune up the system. I'm not a purist and I use one of the tractors daily to feed with in cold weather. The 12 volt conversion worked well for me. On my SMTA I used the original generator bracket turned upside down to mount the alternator. and used the chrysler type resister. I had the starter redone to use a ford type solenoid instead of the pull rod and I run the wire around the resister for starting.

For the coil of my 400 I went to my local automotive supply house and got a 12 volt coil with the internal resistor. Worked great.

Get a true 12V coil that does not require an external resistor. Your auto parts store will be able to give you a few choices. If I may suggest--consider having your 6V generator and Voltage regulator upgrade to 12V in lieu of the alternator unless you just got to have a lot of amps.
