Using Felt Seals and gaskets

I'm starting to put the seals back in the A, and now for a couple more questions:

is there any prep work required for the felt type seals ? Such as soaking them in oil, or maybe just putting some around the edge ?

For the paper/card board type, same question, do I soak them at all ? What about using a thin layer of gasket maker (high temp orange stuff that comes in a tube) on both surfaces ?

Final question, I have a complete gasket set for rebuilding the motor, it's from Federal Mogul. There is a round felt seal, maybe 3/4 to 1" dia, with maybe a 3/8 hole in the centre, what the heck is that for ?

Thanks again,
Brian
Toronto.

I had to go to the case dealer today, I asked him how they used to service the gaskets. He said that they would soak them in oil. This provided lubrication for the gasket. As previously mentioned, this gasket (on crank seal) will be soaked with oil anyway. He also said that the felt gaskets on the wheel hubs were different. Those gaskets are to keep out dirt and not be soaked with oil.

Just thought I'd share another opinion.

I used that same gasket set on mine. It worked great with one exception. the head gasket sucked! I realy recommend getting that at the dealer. Mine leaked oil out one side and water out the other. head and block were perfectly flat and it was torqued properly.

Yes, a felt gasket should be soaked in oil first, such as a crank seal. I try to replace with lip seals. I like to use some form of adhesive on a gasket, depending on the surface & location. Just make sure the surface is oil free.

I was wondering, on my H, should I soak the felt that goes near the governor on the shaft to the carb? Thanks.

John, I didn't oil that felt seal when I put mine together. The function of that seal is to keep dust/dirt out of the governor housing which is under a slight vacuum while allowing for alignment of the throttle shaft housing. The other reason is that any oil being squeezed out when tightening the plate would only collect dust.
