Were the original tires for H's 10-38 and M's 11-36 ? Someone told me the specs. for H's changed after 1942.
Thanks,
Bob Dunn in Il.

yes '39 m's and h's came with 36" rims. the later m's could have 10", 11",,or 12" rear tires. i have two sets of 36" rims for the early m's and have had several m's with 10" rims, but most of them have 11" rear rims.
in the '50 tractor field book it lists h's rear tires as 10 x 38 as standard and 11 x 38 as oversize. for an m the 11 x 38 is standard and 12 x 38 as oversize. also hv's and mv's did use 36" rear tires.

I believe the 39 M and H had 36 inch tires. I think this was 1939 only, someone will correct me. After that the standard tire for the H was 10-38, for the M 11-38. Other sizes were optional, but they were all 38's.

I think you're right, although I'm not really all that sure either. I believe IF there is any correction it would be that the H's had 10" rims and M's had 11" rims, and whatever tire fit on was used, standard being 10" tires on H and 12.5 on M. I have 11" rims on my Super M with 13.6 tires, which is the original size tire on that tractor. I don't M's had 13.6, I do believe they had rim sized tires (11"). What we are discussing here will probably bring a load of discussion and friendly debate, because this is one of the many historical restoration topics yet to be totally proven and solved about the history of IH tractors. Thanks for the discussion CNKS, and hopefully Bob will at least have a little better idea of letter series tires through other responses.

All I do (in addition to remebering the tractors we had on the farm as a kid) is read the specs in my H and M operators manuals -- 10-38, 11-38 standard with other widths available. Remember there is no difference in a "rim sized" tire and the newer designation. Same tire, one expressed as tread width and one as cross section. I agree that the tire that is advertised is likely a 38 inch if it is for an H or an M. The HV and MV did have 36 inch tires.

The reason I asked is that I am looking for one used tire for my work H . A set of tires on wheels is for sale on the net and the tire size for those is 36.
Thanks,
Bob

Didn't the HV and/or MV have 36" tires? C's and Super C's did. Or maybe a cotton picker.

Well, Dad had a '39 H that had 11-38 tires that were oversized for the rims so We put 10X38's on it. Dad's M's and Super M's all had 12X38's on it so they now wear 13.6 X 38's, and My Super H had 11X38's so now it has 12.4 X 38's on it. Of all the THOUSANDS of tractors I've ever seen, the only 36" rear rubber I've seen was on a Super C... something like a 9.5 X 36. I bet the wheel/rim/tire Your looking at is a misprint and is really a 38".
