Anyone put a hydraulic pump inline with crankshaft?

My M doesn't have live hydraulics and I been looking at different options of adding it. Is it possible to put a pump directly inline with the crankshaft where the hand crank connects?

I have a Super A with an A motor ( before my time ) . When I bought it it had a power steering pump to run the Hydraulics . It was slower than the second coming so I proceded to look into ways of fixing the problem , short of changing a good motor . The crank has a centering hole in it, so I made a shaft that looks like the end of a hand crank . I ground down the end so it fit the centering hole and placed it in there with a small combine pump on the end. I made sure it self centered then tightened it up.That was 2 years ago and it runs the touch control perfectly. So it can be done , but maybe only on tractors that the crank lines up like it does on the Super A.

That must be a cool set-up. I thought about trying to doing something like that awhile back, but I could never figure out how to keep the shaft attached to the crank. How did you do that?

Pete I used a roll pin also . If you had the engine crank , make it like the end of it plus the extra that you add to go in the crank center hole . You have to mount the pump tight or the shaft will have the tendency to jump out like a hand crank does . It does work well though The pump came off a combine , I think it just lifted the head so it's only about 1100 g/p/s, but plenty big enough for a Super A If I remember you must add about 3/8 of an inch for the centering hole on the crank and taper it so it fits tight.

I took a Char-Lynn pump off of a WD-9 that ran from the crankshaft and it had a sleeve that fit over the crank with hole and a roll pin drove in where the pin was that the crank engaged into.

I have been thinking of the same setup for a H. You will have to replace the shaft for hand starting with a custom shaft with a "CV" or "U" joint and a special coupler to the front of the crank. Then the trick is to build the bracket to hold your pump out front. It would be a cool setup. I have seen several M's with the hydraulic pump mounted off to the side of the engine, driven by a sprocket-chain setup.

Good luck.

Can't direct drive a hyd pump off the front of the crankshaft on an M as the upper bolster pivot shaft is in the way. (That's why the hand crank shaft is mounted at an angle to the left of the tractor centerline.)

Now someone on this board recently posted photos of a live installed a pump on an H. He located the pump beneath the crankshaft and drove it via a timing (toothed) belt from an auxiliary timing belt pulley installed on the crankshaft. Did a nice job with it, but it looked like it required a lot of machine work.

A better plan would be to find/install an aftermarket "live" (distributor drive) pump kit for your M.

Yeah do you know where you can get the distributor drive or parts for the distributor drive for the live hydraulic pump. Please let me know.

Steve@nd posted a pic of a live pump run off the front of the crankpulley.... It was in an implement dealers H with a loader.

If I remember it was a double timing chain with a sprocket welded to the crank pulley, and the pump directly below.

Yep, my welding/machine shop has an H with the chain driven pump. I am planning to set mine up the same way, only with a belt. They run 2500 psi with the loader so they need a chain. I'm going to run a B section V-belt for mine and limit pressure to 1000 psi since I just mow and rake with my H.

Have seen a pump mounted underneath the engine driven by a cogged tooth belt on an H. Pulleys and belt are very pricey (I believe over $300 for pulleys and belt - no pump). This setup only works if you have narrow front or original wide front set forward.

Have also seen the driveshaft going through the hole where the crank goes. Have to have a CV joint or U-joint because of the angle, plus a hanger with a bearing to keep everything in line.

Many ways to do it, just takes time and some engineering!

I was wrong about where the pump is!

We did that on a SW-6 which is the same engine as a Super M. Don't recall the details, that was 40 years ago...

An International 650 I'm looking at buying has a pump mounted in front through the handcrank hole. Didn't look to see how they attached anything though. I raked hay for a lot of years with a Super H that had a hydraulic pump run with a chain and sprocket run off the belt pully drive.
